In fifth grade, your child will be reading more difficult stories and will be asked to tell about the story. They will be reading harder texts independently, as well as reading along with the teacher. Please work on having your child write about what they read, as well as telling characters, setting, and plot.

This year is very exciting because your child will be taking the statewide test called MSA. The test is given in March. Your child will be expected to write about what they have read by discussing the title, fantasy vs. realism, character traits, inferences (telling what the text is not directly saying, although it is just expected to be known) as well as many other skills. In math, your child will be expected to no only solve problems, but also explain all the steps they took to solve the problem. Have your child explain what they did to solve the problem and then do what they said to see if you get the same answer, the same way. If you do not do it the way they wanted you to, have them explain again using more details. Ask your child's teacher how you can help review skills at home in reading and math.

Supply List - Click for the school supply list.  Remember, you may need to replenish these supplies during the year because they are all used. Ask the teacher if they need more.

Here are some great websites that your child will visit during the year, as well as some sites that may be helpful with the skills that we are learning at school.

AAA Math - This site will work on math skills (watch the work to see which skills to work on at )

PBS Kids- A great site with educational and fun activities from your child's favorite shows

Eduplace- This website has activities to do, that go along with the stories that they are reading in school.

A+ Math- This site offers math flash cards, basic facts practice, and work help. This is very helpful when working on basic addition and subtraction facts.

Funbrain- A site with games, such as grammar gorilla, staying afloat categories, and many more.

Multiplication- This site works on multiplication facts!
